GENERAL INFORMATION
You need a KYU (Kentucky Weight Distance) permit if your vehicle’s combined licensed weight is above 60,000 lb or more and you operate on Kentucky roads—even for a single trip or while passing through. This applies to both in-state and out-of-state carriers.
Carriers that travel in both Kentucky and other states must comply with both KYU and IFTA licensing rules.
KENTUCKY WEIGHT DISTANCE PERMITThe Kentucky Weight Distance Tax (KYU) is a quarterly road use tax charged to carriers operating vehicles with a combined license weight greater than 60,000 pounds. It applies to both interstate carriers and intrastate carriers traveling on Kentucky highways and Kentucky roads.

The heavier the truck and the more distance covered, the more you’ll owe. This weight-distance tax applies to commercial vehicles, including for-hire fleets and vehicles owned by private businesses, unless exempt.
KENTUCKY WEIGHT DISTANCE TAXThe KYU tax must be filed every quarter, even if your fleet drove zero miles in Kentucky during that time.
The Kentucky Weight Distance Permit Application and Weight Distance Tax can now be processed through the Federal Applications Processor for commercial motor vehicles with a gross weight or combined weight of 60,000 pounds or more, operating in both interstate and intrastate commerce within the state of Kentucky.
